I've been tasked to evaluate a number of reporting/visualization
frameworks and have downloaded and completed the BIRT tutorial.
I've got one outstanding question that I didn't see addressed anywhere.
I see that release 2.2 support HTML, Paginated HTML, PDF, WORD, XLS, and
PostScript . Does BIRT use any interim, translated metadata format (i.e.
XSL, etc) or does it directly create one of the aforementioned outputs?
Thanks.

Scott,
You can run the report to an intermediate binary file called a
rptdocument and render any of the output formats from it or runandrender
directly to one of the output formats. You can also write your own
emitter to create your own output format :>
