Eclipse Installer blocked by Norton [message #1869159] Sat, 03 August 2024 10:19 Go to next message

I am not able to install the "Eclipse Installer" on my Win 10 laptop, as Norton blocks it running for the following reason:

"Suspicious process attempted to modify attributes of a file protected by Data Protector....Data Protector blocked a suspicious action by eclipse-inst.exe"

I have never experienced this with any other 'installer' type app and wonder if this is a known issue within the Eclipse community?

I've not heard that before. In any case, the installer is not really an installer that modifies the registry or stuff like that. It's effectively just an Eclipse RCP application that uses Eclipse Equinox's p2 director to create an installation directly on disk. On Windows, it's like a self-extracting zip that launches the application from that extracted content; it exacts into the temp folder. Maybe Norton doesn't like that. You can download a package if your virus tool doesn't like the installer.

Norton might not like installs and updates in that installation for the same reason it doesn't like the installer doing that.

Many thanks for replying Ed, apologies for late reply.

I tried running the Eclipse installer on my wife's Windows 11 PC (which has the exact same version of Norton installed) and the installer worked perfectly.

I initially thought that meant my laptop problem might be due to it being a Windows 10 machine. However I retried running the installer again on the laptop today and this time - much to my surprise - it too worked. I'm thinking perhaps a recent Windows update has fixed the issue. Or alternatively Norton itself has had an update.

Anyway. problem solved :)

Thanks again

Stephen
