Hello,

I installed Eclipse IDE and asked how I could open and visualize UML diagrams like this one:
https://i.imgur.com/6ZJI8HU.jpg

I was suggested to use Papyrus..

I don't know how to install it
is it a stand-alone program?
I downloaded Papyrus (Papyrus-Update-6.0.0M2.zip) but there is no executable file (I use MS Windows 10)

is it a Eclipse IDE plugin/add-on?
I also tried to install Papyrus from Eclipse IDE using:
Help > Install new software
--> I didn't find Papyrus
help > marketplace.
I found Papyrus BPMN, SysML etc
but not UML
Is this the correct way? and which Papyrus should I use?

is there a installation guide?

Thanks

Hi Matthieu,

the IMHO simplest way to get Eclipse Papyrus is to download a RCP package at
https://www.eclipse.org/papyrus/download.html

Then you just have to uncompress it into a directory and run the executable.

Papyrus 6 is in a early alpha stage. A milestone 2 build to be exactly. By no way meant to be used productive. The 6.0 release is scheduled to be publish in December.

I would go for the 5.2 release or even the 4.8 release at https://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/modeling/mdt/papyrus/rcp/2020-06/4.8.0/papyrus-2020-06-4.8.0-win64.zip.

Eclipse Papyrus is the UML editor. BPMN, SysML, ... are add-ons and thus stated in the marketplace.

I installed version 5.2 RCP. thanks for the tip on "RCP" package.

I received the diagrams in 3 file formats:
xxxx.uml (UML_2_2)
xxxx.emx
xxxx.xmi (XMI_2_4_1)

I can open (file -> open file) all 3 files with Papyrus.
but I can't find the way to visualize the diagrams, I only see text.
is there a conversion or a plug-in I need to install first?

Hmm, emx-file sounds like the model was done using the IBM Rational Software Architect.

Ok, try to
1. create a new empty Papyrus Model with a different name than your uml-file
2. then copy the uml-file you received into the project directory
3. press F5 in Papyrus to refresh the project
4. perform a context menu -> Import -> Import Package From User Model on the top most element (should be a folder icon decorated with a triangle)
5. follow the import wizard's process

If the UML file you got fulfills the UML rules -- which in this case might be, because as far as I know the IBM Rational Software Architect is based on Eclipse EMF -- you at least have the model imported. No diagrams, though.

But you can create some initial diagrams by drag'n'drop model elements onto the diagram plane of a freshly created diagram and perform a context menu -> Arrange All on the diagram.
