I was able to install the Java 17 patch on Eclipse 2021-09
https://marketplace.eclipse.org/content/java-17-support-eclipse-2021-09-421

It was not easy by the way, but I got it installed.

After install the following is missing:
JDK Compliance: Java Compiler Level 17
Java Execution Environment: JavaSE-17

Java 16 is the highest I can select on these two.
I can select Java 17 on Java Facets only.

That basically means the installation of the feature wasn't successful. Can you share what difficulty you faced when installing? After installation, do you see the Java 17 support feature on the "Eclipse SDK Installation Details" page?

I don't remeber exactly what problem I faced.
I shall try to uninstall and then reinstall the plugin.

When installing the Java 17 plugin
First it takes a very long time to begin
Cannot perform operation: Computing alternate solutions, may take a while 1 / 15

Then I get
The installation cannot be completed as requested
Choose one of the following alternate solutions.
1. Keep my installation the same and modify the items being installed to be compatible
2. Update my installation to be compatible with the items being installed
3. Show original error and build my own solution

I chose option 1, then it installed, but I do not have these available in Eclipse.
JDK Compliance: Java Compiler Level 17
Java Execution Environment: JavaSE-17

It was much easier to install the Java 17 AddOn on a fresh Eclipse 2021-09 distribution downloaed and unpacked.
Though the installation took a while, no shocker there.
After I had in this new Eclipse installation both Compiler and Execution Environment for Java 1.7 available.

I hate to do a fresh install of Eclipse. I have so much adjustments done over the years, and all the additional plugins I have to install again.

I think I will just do a fresh install and take some time to configure it the same way as my current Eclipse installation.

I have usually just upgraded Eclipse, to avoid this. Too bad Eclipse cannot easily be upgraded. I have had no such problems upgrading IntellJ IDEA.

My fresh installation of Eclipse 2021-09 was able to install the Java 17 Patch.
When updating the Eclipse, seem to uninstall some of the patch. The plugin was still installed, but the Java 17 features was missing.

I uninstalled it, and now when I run an Update it will try to install
"Eclipse PDE Patch with Java 17 support for 2021-09 development stream1.2.200.v20210914-1447_BETA_JAVA17"
It does this every time I run Update now.

Installing two plugins before installing Java 17 Patch
1. Eclipse C/C++ IDE CDT
2. Groovy Development Tools

After installing the Java 17 Patch is not possible. I am getting the same error I got on my old Eclipse installation.

I started again with a fresh Eclipse installation. Skipped the CDT, and installed the Groovy Development Tools.
Same problem. It would not install the Java 17 Patch.

Seems the Groovy Development Tools are in conflict with the Java 17 Patch.
