Been there , done that,
It seems to have an issue installing / updating to /media / "anything "
I extracted the last 2020-03 to /home/user , and run test protected just fine,
Added "TCF" software and it won't find editor , hence NOTHING works anymore.
ADDENDUM
Actual error posted on different download
No editor descriptor for id org.eclipse.cdt.ui.editor.CEditor
How is that possible ?
Also tried , on different download of 2020-03 , to just "check for updates " - it downloaded few and now it wants Java 11... hence NOTHING works anymore.
What kind of updates / new software install is Eclipse peddling ? IT USED TO WORK !
How is that possible ?
ps Anybody knows WORKING IDE where I can use TCF plugin ?

Your original post said you wanted to go from 3.8 to 2020-03.
You failed to mention you achieved that and it worked.
Now you tell us your problem is after adding TCF.
You could save a lot of time by stating the actual issue up front.
Looks like your actual issue is when installing TCF to a rather old Eclipse release.
You might be better off asking at TCF support
https://www.eclipse.org/tcf/support.php
TCF and CDT are different projects.
This forum is about CDT.
Asking about TCF here is a long shot.
The same with asking about Eclipse updating which is really a platform issue.
A bit like expecting the guy who built your garage to fix your car
because you park it there.
