The Eclipse Foundation is looking for a European-based Senior Linux Systems Administrator, ideally in Germany or France, to join our existing IT team in supporting the Eclipse Community of open source projects and developers. You will be assisting with the management and maintenance of the Eclipse IT Infrastructure and providing technical support to Eclipse users and project teams.
Our server environment consists mainly of headless Linux servers, apache httpd and nginx, Kubernetes, MariaDB & PostgreSQL, git, Gerrit, Gitlab and php applications. Tasks can include troubleshooting build jobs, remote server deployment and debugging, service monitoring and deployment, build and service troubleshooting, creating mailing lists and communicating with teams and users using various channels.

The Eclipse Foundation is a not-for-profit, member supported corporation that hosts the Eclipse projects and helps cultivate both an open source community and an ecosystem of complementary products and services. The Eclipse IT team is a dynamic team focused on results, and consists of seven technical staff including three web developers, two systems administrators and two release engineers.
Primary Responsibilities include:
● Provide technical support, including patching and updating, for the physical and virtual server environments, including container and cluster operations
● Provide monitoring and reporting on uptime and accessibility of applications and physical infrastructure
● Perform daily system monitoring, verifying and documenting the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs
● Maintain best practices, security and patch management in a virtualized environment
● Create documentation outlining day-to-day operational processes which include standard support and maintenance activities, change requests
● In conjunction with the overall IT team, liaise with the broad Eclipse community on infrastructure and IT related issues, including through forums, GitHub Issues, etc.
● With other members in the team, provide after-hour coverage and problem resolution
Job Skills and Requirements
● Solid understanding of Linux system administration using a CLI environment over SSH
● Solid ability to use scripting languages (Perl, PHP, Bash, Python) to automate tasks
● Solid knowledge of TCP/IP networking, the SMTP and HTTP protocols, and troubleshooting
● Experience configuring and debugging network services (Apache httpd, Postfix, nginx)
● Experience with database services (Maria/MySQL, PostgreSQL)
● Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and container environments
● Experience with virtualization technologies such as Xen or qemu
● Experience with Jenkins, Maven and Tycho are assets
● Knowledge of Git, Gerrit, Gitlab and Eclipse are assets
● Website creation (HTML, JavaScript, CSS)
● Knowledge of Network Security, including GPG, Firewall, OpenSSL and TLS
Experience, Education and other Skills
● Relevant work experience in a 24/7 Linux Enterprise Server environment
● A college diploma/university degree, or relevant work experience
● Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
● Solid problem solving skills and attention to detail
● Interest in both learning new technologies and identifying efficiencies and improvements to processes
● Excellent project/task management skills
● Able to work well with others in a small team
● Self-starter, resourceful, and ability to work remotely
While Eclipse Foundation is based in Ottawa, ON, Canada, the successful applicant will be joining our European team, all of whom work remotely.
