The makefile editor colors 'Makefile' and 'makefile' properly, but does not do it on a file with an extension in the name. I have *.mak associated with Makefile editor, and the colors do not appear.

index.php/fa/37992/0/

Is there a setting I have overlooked?

Eclipse is 2020-03 with plenty of plug-ins, including CDT.

Eclipse will remember the last editer used on a file. If you have opened the file prior to setting the .mak extension, the file was likely opened in the simple text editor. Try closing the file. Then right click on the file in the explorer and select Open with->Makefile editor.

I did so.

I even opened it with the Open with -> Other dialog, and picked 'Internal editors', from there Makefile Editor, and checked the 'Use it for all *mak files'. No colors.

Check the Content Types preference page for an entry specific to Makefles (I can't be sure there is one). If there is, add *.mak to its list of file name patterns.

It is there:
index.php/fa/37995/0/

Makefile is there, but makefile is not; both color correctly.
If I change makefile to makefile.mak, the editor pales.

index.php/fa/37995/0/

It seems that the editor is doing something fishy with the filenames.

That is the "File Associations" preference page, not the "Content Types" preference page. There's a link at the top of the preference page to take you to the one I'm talking about.
