How did Eclipse update from 2019-12 to 2020-03 without running the installer? [message #1823044] |

Today I was running 2019-12. I noticed that 2020-03 was released, so I downloaded the installer, but I haven't done anything with it yet. I also noticed some plugin updates for my 2019-12 distribution. I don't remember exactly what was in that list, it was 10 or so plugins long.
I've been rebooting a few times to deal with unrelated issues on my laptop, and I noticed one curious dialog when I restarted Eclipse at one point. It was saying that my workspace was "intended for an older release". This didn't make much sense to me, as I've been using the same workspace with 2019-12 since I installed 2019-12.
Then, a while later, after another restart, I noticed that the Eclipse splash screen says it is 2020-03, and the "About" list shows version 4.15 of the platform. I still have not run the installer for 2020-03.
At the same time, I'm getting an unexpected error from the Groovy plugin about building Java code, but that does seem unrelated to these other issues, although this is a "coincidence", so it's hard to say.
