Ive just tried to open eclipse for the first time and it comes up with an error about the network. I am not behind a proxy and the program is allowed through my firewall so what do i do?

Strange, it seems that previously you had eclipse already working:

https://www.eclipse.org/forums/index.php/m/1811329/#msg_1811329

The first thing the installer does is try to download this resource:

http://www.eclipse.org/setups/setups.zip

If that works, a copy of it should appear in <home>/.eclipse/org.eclipse.oomph.setup/cache with the file name http___www.eclipse.org_setups_setups.zip. If that fails, there is some problem with the network; it's possible the server itself was not working at that point in time. It's also possible that your firewall software has blocked network access. Is that folder empty for you?

How did you get Eclipse working previously?
