This is more to do with the number of Rules and the size of .Xtext grammar file.

Is it possible that i can define the rules in multiple .Xtext files, rather than a big one.

yes and know. you can only have one hierarchy and super grammar stuff will be inlined. => it wont help.
they only thing is that if your domain has different parts. then you can split them up.
=> would need more details to say if it is possible or worth in your case
