What is the general guidance for when to use the event broker vs context variables?

I'm working on a Editor using DIEditor with toolbar buttons etc. In some handlers it seems easier to use event broker to send events and in others context variables.
I was just wondering if there is a best practices sort of thing for when to use one or the other? Seems you can do a lot of the same functionality with either depending on where your context is and what you stuff in your context..... just trying to decide if that is really a good idea or not.
