Based on an xsd (XML schema file) I need to write an editor that allows to create and edit the corresponding XML files. Now, this is something that I had been doing with Eclipse and EMF ~10 years ago already multiple times, so I first thought, that's a piece of cake. |
But to my dismay it's not so easy to get my hands on EMF in Eclipse these days anymore. Apparently the EMF tools are not part of the default Oxygen distro any more. So I added the EMF download site (http://download.eclipse.org/modeling/emf/updates/releases/) to the list of update sites. I then get a list of EMF versions and variants but when I e.g. select "EMF SDK 2.5.0 (EMF + XSD)" to be downloaded and installed instead of doing so, Eclipse decides that it "cannot perform operation. Computing alternate solutions, may take a while" and then it goes off and computes "something" which literally takes hours!
After maybe three hours it displays an error message. Unfortunately I clicked it away (I am re-running the process to get hold of the precise error), but I seem to remember that it couldn't find some update site. :-(
So, how can one get EMF into Eclipse Oxygen these days? Or what else would these days be the "Eclipse way" of achieving what I intend, namely to create a decent XML editor with minimal effort based on a given schema file?
