I add a -Xmx4G manually to my eclipse-oxygen eclipse.ini. But oomph is changing this back to -Xmx1024m during each restart ... why? :D

You could ask the profile provider to restrict this Eclipse Ini task to bootstrap trigger so that it applies only when the installation is first created. Or you could define an Eclipse Ini ask for your desired value in your user.setup, so it should override any profile task definitions for all installations you have. Or you could do this same thing just in your installation.setup so you override it only for that one installation. Use Navigate -> Open Setup -> User/Installation/Workspace to open that setup in which to create your override,
