stdout is buffered.
You need to do one of
1) fflush(stdout) when you want the output (say, after a prompt) http://www.cplusplus.com/reference/cstdio/fflush/
2) change the buffering scheme http://www.cplusplus.com/reference/cstdio/setvbuf/
