Upgrading Eclipse 3.8 to Oxygen [message #1768604] Thu, 20 July 2017 09:29 Go to next message

OK, I downloaded Oxygen into Download folder.
I expanded it into same.
Now for real stupid question:

HOW do I actually install it into whatever OS I am using - Rasbpian (Raspberry Pi) or Ubuntu ?

I am getting strange feeling that "Oxygen for Linux" is not same / ready to "sudo ... install " as "Oxygen for Ubuntu /Raspbian.

I guess I got spoil by sudo apt-get install xxx.
I did try to Install New Software from within running Eclipse 3.8 and got hopelessly lost.
I guess 3.8 is not that easy to do that in. It takes forever.
Thanks for understanding my frustrations.

If you downloaded the installer, you run it and use it to install.

I am not sure where is this being posted , I got here by "reply" using e-mail
I did read the liks referenced and feel goo since I am not the only one truggling with this.
Apprently eclipse methods of udating / upgrading are not the same as the restof the Linux world. Odd at least.
That is probably why Elipse gurus forgot to mention one needs to download "Eclipse" installer application and not just DOWNLOAD Oxygen.
I'll try that next.

One more time , please someone help for real.
I "downloaded " latest Oxygen. Using Ubuntu.

Now I have "eclipse_installer" extracted folder and ....
what should I guess is the actual application which will actually install eclipse oxygen ?
The closest one is "eclipse_inst" and when I "run" it I get NO response from OS.

Try running from the Ubuntu command console, so you'll get the possible error messages.

Do you have an acceptable Java in the computer?

If your Ubuntu is new enough, you can install Java 1.8 from the repository. In my Kubuntu 16.04LTS, Java is openjdk version 1.8.0_131, which works fine with Oxygen.
