It occurs very often that I want to add/update a feature in Eclipse (v3.3.2).
When I go to the Update Manager, select the update site and start the update
I got the response e.g.
JST Web Core Patch .... requires feature ......
and is aborted.
So I have to fiddle out what component is required before installing the actual feature.
That is very unconvenient. Is there really no option:
"Install at first everything necessary, underlying patches and then my actual feature"?

Have you noticed the "Select Required" button in the Update Manager
dialog (on the screen where you can check which features you want)? It
will automatically select the features that are required for whatever
features you have already selected there, as long as the update site for
those pre-requisites was included when you selected which update sites
to search in (the previous screen in the Update Manager dialog).
Note: there is a bug that requires you to first expand each top-level
node in the tree of sites/features before Select Required will work
correctly. You only have to expand one level deep, but you have to do it
for each top-level node.
By the way, in 3.4.x this UI is totally different and resolves
dependencies more automatically for you. You should move to 3.4 if possible.
Hope this helps,
Eric
