[SOLVED] installing eclipse neon on linux [message #1765442] Fri, 09 June 2017 10:12 Go to next message

It has been a while since I used eclipse. I have some java code that I want to debug so I am planning to use Eclipse. I have downloaded the installer tar file, and untarred the file. When I go to the readme html file I don't see an install section there.

When I go to https://www.eclipse.org/downloads/eclipse-packages/?show_instructions=TRUE it tells me to run the installer:

For Mac and Linux users, you will still need to unzip the download to create the Installer. Start the Installer once it is available."

In the unzipped area, I do not see an installer, except for windows. It would be nice if the instructions named the installer, or gave a simple example on how to run the installer.

Can someone tell me how to find and start the installer for Linux?

For Linux you need to untar it. The root folder that you create is called eclipses-installer and in there is a file with executable permissions called eclipse-inst. That is the executable you can invoke to run the installer. Note there is also an eclipse-inst.ini you can edit (just like the eclipse.ini you can edit in any Eclipse installation) to affect parameters passed to the program, e.g., the -vm if the default JVM on your PATH isn't an appropriate one...
