The Eclipse Foundation is looking for a Linux Systems Administrator in Germany or France to join our existing IT team in supporting the Eclipse Community of open source projects and developers. You will be providing technical support to Eclipse users and project teams. Task can include creating mailing lists, build jobs, remote server debugging, service monitoring and deployment, build and service troubleshooting, and communicating with teams and users using various channels.

The Eclipse Foundation is a not-for-profit, member supported corporation that hosts the Eclipse projects and helps cultivate both an open source community and an ecosystem of complementary products and services.


Primary Responsibilities include:

  • Provide a balanced, high level of knowledge and support of both Network administration and Server/Systems administration
  • Provide technical support for the physical and virtual server infrastructure and environments
  • Provide monitoring and reporting on uptime and accessibility of applications and physical infrastructure
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying and documenting the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs
  • Maintain best practices, security and patch management in a virtualized environment
  • Create documentation outlining day-to-day operational processes which include standard support and maintenance activities, change requests
  • Flexibility for after hour coverage and problem resolution


Job Skills and Requirements

  • Solid understanding of Linux system administration using a CLI environment over SSH
  • Solid ability to use scripting languages (Perl,PHP,Bash,Python) to automate tasks
  • Solid knowledge of TCP/IP networking, the SMTP and HTTP protocols, and troubleshooting
  • Experience configuring and debugging network services (Apache httpd, Postfix)
  • Experience with database services (Maria/MySQL, PostgreSQL)
  • Experience with virtualization technologies such as Xen
  • Experience with Hudson, Jenkins, Maven and Tycho
  • Knowledge of Git, Gerrit, Eclipse are assets
  • Website creation (HTML, JavaScript, CSS)
  • Knowledge of Network Security, including GPG, Firewall, OpenSSL and TLS


Experience, Education and other Skills

  • Relevant work experience in a Linux Enterprise Server environment
  • A college diploma/university degree, or relevant work experience
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal
  • Solid problem solving skills and attention to detail
  • Interest in learning new technologies
  • Good project/task management skills
  • Able to work well with others in a small team
  • Self-starter, resourceful, and ability to work remotely
