For larger messages on slow links, I'd like to know when a message is currently being received so that I do not intentionally disconnect during this time.

Is there any sort of callback which could be used when the message starts being received?

That's a good question. Which Paho client are you using? I'm not aware of any implementation that does allow you to do this yet. I suggest opening a Github issue for the client you are interested in.

I'm using the Java/Android implementation.

There isn't currently anything in the Java client that would allow this, however you're welcome to raise an enhancement request for that functionality here: https://github.com/eclipse/paho.mqtt.java/issues/new
