Does anyone know how to get Eclipse (Luna) to recognise jars added to the build path via the Add Variable option?

I can see the folder added and the jar files listed in the Referenced Libraries. But none of the files are recognised as jar!

If I add the same jars (jdom-2.0.6.jar in example) via Add External Jar, eclipse is happy. This method is not as convenient as the using a variable because i) file system might be different on different machines and ii) I don't want to have to remember to select each jar within the nested folder structure when using Add External Jar.

Any pointers welcome!
