In the BIRT Report Designer I define a couple of XML Data Sources. The actual source folder should be specified at runtime through report parameters, while I don't want to specify a default report location. This approach works for the report generation.

However, if I want to define a new data set based on such a data source the pages Row Mapping and Column Mapping in the Edit Data Set dialog yield the error XML data source cannot be retrieved. This happens even though I specified Sample XML Settings.

Is this by intention that the sample data is used for the preview result only?

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.
