Java missing in preferences [message #1701354] Sun, 12 July 2015 09:44 Go to next message
Eclipse UserFriend
I have a new installation of Debian Linux with Eclipse 3.8.1
When typing "java -version" on the command line, I get

java version "1.7.0_79"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea 2.5.5) (7u79-2.5.5-1~deb8u1)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.79-b02, mixed mode)

But Eclipse shows no Java in Window/Preferences, so I can't compile.

edit: corrected Eclipse version

Rudolf,

Eclipse doesn't have version numbers as high as 8.8.1 so who knows what
you have pre-installed. Best you install one that supports Java
development from https://www.eclipse.org/downloads/

I changed to version 4.5.0 Eclipse for Java downloaded directly - now the problem is solved.

Odds are that Debian has split Eclipse into different packages, making it possible to install the Platform without the Java tools, and giving that platform package the name "eclipse". You would have needed other packages to add the Java tools, then, but that wouldn't change 3.8.1 being years old.

Rudolf,

I'm not sure what's in that Eclipse package, but it's definitely old.
Better to install one you've downloaded from the link I gave you.
