Is it possible to automatically trigger validation rules to be run upon direct edit rather than requiring the user to explicitly validate the diagram instance?

In your direct edit tool, you could use a Java service to trigger the
validation rules or call the diagram validation

You could also look into EMF Validation to provide validation
constraints with a live scope (but this will not be triggered in direct
edit tools only).
