Modifying Eclipse Communication Framework (ECF) Contacts View [message #1694201]

Hello,

I've been attempting to integrate ECF's Contacts View (along with its functionality) into my own plugin. However, I also want to add several features. My current approach has been to simply edit the source code. I feel that this is quite bad practice. I've spent time searching through the code looking for singletons or static methods to acquire some object which would allow an external class to make changes to the ECF plugin to no avail.

My question is, what is the best practice recommendation to make minor changes to ECF for integration into my own plugin?
