Member's Forum, but... there is a certain Dilbert quality to it that
could be addressed in a future version.
Here's the problem... Eclipse is a layered solution, and the liveness
measure tilts towards the lower layers. I, out in the "less live" TPTP
land, can (and do) respond to newsgroup postings in eclipse.tptp (of
course), but also in .cdt, .jdt, .platform, etc. The people working in
the "lower layers" are less likely to respond "outward". Thus, there is
a certain disincentive (which I'll force myself to ignore) to my
continuing to participate in the "lower layer" newsgroups.
So, enough whining... how about a solution? One suggestion I have (which
would also solve another problem I perceive) is that we committers could
be given "response points" to go with our respective projects live-ness
measure based on postings in "lower layer" newsgroups. *Extra* points
would/should be given for responses in eclipse.newcomer, *the* place
that needs the most responsiveness of all, but which has too little
participation (IMHO, that "other problem" I mentioned).
Yes, responding in those groups might be perceived as having nothing to
do with the "live-ness" of a given project, but I would argue that the
"community" live-ness benefits greatly and thus does reflect the
vitality of the projects those people work on, and thus the improvement
would be appropriate.

I agree with most of your points Randy, and I'd even argue to have a
more tiered system. Certain frameworks, like say EMF and GEF are more
likely to be used than say TPTP (projects like TPTP are often consumers
of EMF/GEF). It's because projects like EMF/GEF have a broader impact.
TPTP is more of a niche market (imho) so of course stuff like newsgroup
participation will be lower.
I would like to see stuff like articles (Eclipse.org, DevWorks, etc...)
about projects be counted also in the liveness measure.
In the end, I agree with Randy that the liveness measure needs to be
re-evaluated a bit.
Cheers,
~ Chris
