I am using Ubuntu 12.04 with Eclipse Indigo (Becuase my machine is very slow with Juno). The aero-snap like feature to split the window panes on left and right side are not working for me.
No idea where to troubleshoot this issue and could not find anything in a Google search too.
Please help. ]]>Cyber Jar2012-08-29T02:46:48-00:00Re: Eclipse Aero-Snap like feature not working

Drag and drop doesn't let you rearrange panes in any way you like? E.g.,

Drag and drop of individual tabs works such that I can rearrange their order.
However I cant snap the window to left / right side to have side by side view. ]]>Cyber Jar2012-08-29T05:43:20-00:00Re: Eclipse Aero-Snap like feature not working

different outlines appear showing where the thing will be inserted when
dropped. I can use that to rearrange tab order but also to move
things. E.g., if you drag and editor tab to the far right edge or the
bottom of the editor area, you can have split editor views either above
each other beside each other...

For me I can drag things anywhere and depending on where I drag,
different outlines appear showing where the thing will be inserted when

Ed,
When I drag the tabs along the tab bar I too can see an outline of where it will be dropped. But, when I drag the tab to any of the 4 edges of the screen (top, bottom, left, right) there is no outline and the tab does not resize to fit in that half of the screen.
Is there any setting that needs to be changed? Is Ubuntu 12.04 causing the issue? I would rather not redownload Eclipse because I have to reinstall all my plugins which is a royal pain.]]>Cyber Jar2012-08-29T06:21:30-00:00Re: Eclipse Aero-Snap like feature not working

any number of editors and the views around the editor can be moved so
the editor area can be anywhere.

I think I remember having this problem myself years ago. In the end, I
think, it was due to failing to drag a little bit PAST the edge of the
pane where I wanted to drop the view I was moving. Try that out.]]>Russell Bateman2012-08-29T14:13:45-00:00Re: Eclipse Aero-Snap like feature not working

Hi Russel,
When you say a bit PAST the edge of the pane where you want to drop the view, what does that mean? I tried 2 scenarios from what I could decipher :
1. Eclipse window is maximised and I drag the tab to the edge of the screen (it cant possibly drag any further past that point) --> Still the same
2. Eclipse window is smaller than full dimension of the screen and I drag a little past the edge of the eclipse window --> Still the same
It is probably worth a mention that when I do drag the tab to the edge of eclipse window, there is momentarily an outline drawn in black of the tab sitting in half the window space. This is what I expect. But when I releases the mouse button at that point, nothing happens... ]]>Cyber Jar2012-08-30T00:38:01-00:00Re: Eclipse Aero-Snap like feature not working

Hi Ed,
I really have no idea what you mean by this. im not sure if I have done a decent enough job of explaining the problem I have. I want the side by side view but am not able to achieve it... I dont know why.]]>Cyber Jar2012-08-30T00:39:56-00:00Re: Eclipse Aero-Snap like feature not working

You seem to be talking about the Ubuntu feature where windows dragged to
either the left or right edge of the screen give an orange half window.
If you drop the window it is resized to be half a screen.
This works on the base window of the application but won't work for tabs
in the editor. You need to open a separate window first and drag that
to the screen edge. You can then drag an editor tab to the second
window and drop it.]]>David Wegener2012-08-30T02:03:19-00:00Re: Eclipse Aero-Snap like feature not working

David,
I am aware that it is an Ubuntu feature, but it is possible to do a side by side view of two code windows inside of eclipse too right? that is not happening for me. No idea why.
Either way, I have switched to Juno and it works just fine. Only issue is that its performance is laggy and I have to wait quite a bit... ]]>Cyber Jar2012-08-31T00:57:37-00:00Re: Eclipse Aero-Snap like feature not working

You can always try out Eclipse 3.8 instead of 4.2; I gather that on
Linux the performance is not as good as on Windows, where I use 3.7 and
4.2 on and off regularly without any sense that one is faster or
slower. I seem to recall different/earlier threads suggesting that
tweaking some of the CSS styling can help a lot with performance...

I'm still using Helios very heavily, though I have Indigo and Juno
available on my Ubuntu Maverick development host. (I'm guilty of not
been keen to sharpen my saw until there are no more teeth--hehehe, no
pun intended and shame on me.)
I've also used Europa, Galileo and Helios under Windows. By far, I
prefer developing on Linux, but once I groked the more tactile aspects
of splitting windows, moving views, etc., I've never had any trouble
doing it on any platform at least as far back as Galileo, I think.
Unless I've just completely missed what's going on here, I think this is
a case of me explaining how to shoot an arrow from a bow without
standing next to you and able to coach when I see what you're doing wrong.
However, ...
I just cranked up Juno and tried some of this out. Yes, it doesn't work
as easily as previous versions of Eclipse. In fact, in the short time I
dedicated to the problem, I couldn't locate a view in one case exactly
as I was trying to do. Nevertheless, in your specific case--side by side
editor viewing of classes/files--I had no trouble at all. I grabbed the
tab of the second file, dragged it to the side of the Edit view and voilĂ .
Don't know if this helps or will just be confusing.
