    Eclipse Foundation Executive Report

As we reach the end of 2024, I want to extend my warmest thanks to our community, committers, members, and staff for their dedication to innovation through open source. This year has been a time of significant growth and collaboration, and I’m proud of the progress we’ve made together.

Our flagship event, Open Community Experience (OCX) 2024 in Mainz, brought together leaders from various industries to explore topics like IDEs, Java, AI, IoT, cloud, dataspaces, and SDV. This was our first event under the new OCX banner and the feedback from everyone was extremely positive. Following this success, we’re thrilled to host OCX 2026 in Brussels in Spring 2026. Stay tuned for updates in our mailing list.

In 2024, we also connected with our community at several key events, including TheiaCon 2024, the JakartaOne Livestream, the SDV Hackathon, SDV Community Days, and the first-ever Adoptium Summit. These gatherings strengthened collaboration across industries and fueled new advancements in open source.

This year saw substantial growth within many of our existing initiatives. The OpenHW Group's integration into the Eclipse Foundation, now the OpenHW Foundation, promises to accelerate the development of open source hardware technologies, impacting cloud computing, IoT, automotive, and high-performance computing.

We also launched ThreadX Alliance, a new initiative dedicated to the growth and sustainability of the Eclipse ThreadX real-time operating system (RTOS) and its ecosystem. Having ThreadX receive functional safety certification was a major milestone for open source, as this was an industry first.

The Open Regulatory Compliance Working Group, another significant initiative this year, is working alongside SMEs, industrials, and other open source foundations to develop process specifications for secure software development.

Our priorities for 2025 include continuing to drive open source innovation, advancing open source community compliance with regulation (particularly the European CRA), enhancing interoperability in dataspaces, and expanding support in the Global South, as highlighted in our recent report on the importance of open source in these regions.

As of 30 November 2024, the Eclipse Foundation is thriving, with 392 member organisations and 2,050 committers, a testament to our community's strength. Financially, we are solidly on track, enabling continued investment in our key initiatives.

Thank you for your continued support and collaboration. Wishing you a wonderful holiday season and a bright start to 2025!

The Open Source Initiative and the Eclipse Foundation to Collaborate on Shaping Open Source AI (OSAI) Public Policy

The Eclipse Foundation and the Open Source Initiative (OSI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on promoting the interest of the open source community in the implementation of regulatory initiatives on Open Source Artificial Intelligence (OSAI).

    Updated Governance Documents

The Eclipse Foundation works to keep all of its processes and policies current, to ensure they reflect the ever-evolving open source landscape and to best serve our members and community. To this end, three governance documents were updated in 2024, namely:

    • the Affiliates Membership Guidelines was updated to better clarify the benefits, responsibilities and rights of affiliate companies related to the participation of affiliated members. This did not represent a change per se, but rather to make the subject simpler to understand.
    • the Eclipse Foundation Security Policy (formerly: Eclipse Foundation Vulnerability Reporting Policy) sets forth the general principles under which the Eclipse Foundation manages the reporting, management, discussion, and disclosure of security vulnerabilities discovered in Eclipse software. For more details, read Mikaël Barbero’s blog post.
    • the Hosted Services Privacy and Acceptable Usage Policy was completely overhauled to make clearer the responsibilities of those who manage or host services on behalf of a project or working group. This policy was first introduced in conjunction with the introduction of the GDPR in the EU, and the new updates to the policy ensure that these hosted services are in line with the Foundation’s Privacy Policy. Read Chris Guidon’s blog providing more updates on this policy.
