Evaluating the Potential Impact of the European Cyber Resiliency Act
The EU government is currently considering passing sweeping legislation related to cyber resiliency and software security that, if passed in its current form, would have a significant negative impact on the software industry in general, and more specifically on open source software. Please see the recent blog published by Mike Milinkovich, Eclipse Foundation’s Executive Director, to understand the direct and far reaching impact the current legislation likely would have on the Foundation, its projects, and its open source community.
Nominations are now open for Board Elections
Nominations are currently open for the Eclipse Foundation Board of Directors. The open positions are to serve as the elected representatives of both the Contributing member and Committer member classes. These elected positions are critical to our governance, and we welcome participation.
To nominate a Committer Member representative or a Contributor Member representative, send an email to elections@eclipse.org. Self-nominations are welcome. Nominations close on Friday, 27 January 2023 at 9:00 PM CET / 3:00 PM EST.
As specified in our Bylaws, we expect there will be three elected Committer Member representatives and three elected Contributing Member representatives on next year's board, based on the current number of Strategic members. Elected representatives serve for a one-year term, running from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024.
The Eclipse Foundation and the Eclipse SDV WG will host the first Automotive Open Source Summit on June 6, 2023 at the Hotel Königshof in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. The event will feature speakers from various organizations in the auto industry, including those outside the Eclipse community. The first edition of the Summit will focus on the latest automotive open source software topics and challenges and the steps towards building an automotive-grade open source software stack. As a reminder, the Eclipse Foundation Code of Conduct has been in place since 2015 and governs all community actions. The recent updates modernize and clarify the code, as well as ensure it better aligns with the structure of our community and our various channels of communication.
New Eclipse Foundation Privacy Policy
The Eclipse Foundation has published an updated version of its Privacy Policy, effective December 6, 2022. As the stewards of our open source projects and industry collaborations, we take the protection of your privacy seriously and aim to apply the same standards of protection to all individuals. Learn more about these changes.
As the largest open source foundation in Europe, the Eclipse Foundation has decades of experience in creating and nurturing open source and open specification projects and communities. By creating a working group at the Eclipse Foundation, organizations can experience faster, easier and more cost-effective collaboration and innovation than they would in a standalone association, and thus increase their chances of success. To learn more, read 5 Reasons to Collaborate on Open Source Software at the Eclipse Foundation.
EMO Office Hours
The EMO hosts a monthly office hours call to discuss the Eclipse Foundation Development Process, changes to the Eclipse IP Policy and Due Diligence Process, and other related topics. All Eclipse open source project committers are invited to join. The format is flexible: we generally start with a very short presentation followed by a question and answer session.
Committers can bring their questions and the Eclipse Management Organization team will try to provide answers.
The office hours call schedule and contact information, along with the recording of past sessions can be found on our Eclipse Projects calendar. The next office hours are scheduled for 9 February.
Share your work with the community
Whether it's a demo, presentation, or panel discussion, webinars offer an ideal way to showcase your projects and technologies to the broader Eclipse Foundation community. Let other members know what you’re working on, and why it matters. Consider proposing a presentation for one of our webinar series:
We are pleased to announce openMobility is the first Interest Group Collaboration Proposal received. openMobility has been operating as a formal Eclipse Foundation Working Group for many years; however, with the addition of Interest Groups earlier this year as a lighter-weight governance structure, the existing members of the working group have chosen to now establish openMobility as an Eclipse Foundation Interest Group. This proposal was announced to all members in December and the transition is scheduled to be completed January 2023.
January marks the beginning of the European Commission’s call for research projects season (see Horizon Europe). The Eclipse Foundation has partnered with many publicly funded research projects since 2013 (HEU, H2020, KDT, ITEA, BMBF, BMWi), and we’re hoping to help even more organizations successfully create, publish, and sustain open source software platforms in 2023.
We welcome the opportunity to engage with members of the Foundation to help drive successful research proposals. If you would like to discuss an upcoming proposal, contact us at research@eclipse.org. You can also learn more about the projects we have partnered with and how we support them at eclipse.org/research.
Featured Working Group:
The Adoptium working group’s scope is to advance, promote, and support the dissemination of technologies derived from or related to the Eclipse Adoptium Top-Level Project. The Eclipse Temurin project produces high-quality runtimes binaries and associated technology across the Java ecosystem, currently with more than 11.5 M monthly downloads, and AQAvit is Adoptium’s verification program that offers tools and infrastructure to run a large pool of tests and analyze results. It was created in collaboration with multiple vendors.
The working group already has 12 members, and for 2023 is looking forward to engaging with more enterprise organizations willing to share their runtime usage, needs and to support and participate in this valuable industry initiative.
Each issue of the member newsletter will feature different working groups. Leaders of working groups wishing to be featured during a particular month should contact marketing@eclipse.org.
