    Cyber-Resilience Act What Now (Logo)

    Mike Milinkovich,

    Executive Director Eclipse Foundation

    Eclipse Foundation Executive Report

As we approach the end of 2023, I want to extend my sincere appreciation to the Eclipse community, members, and our dedicated staff for their unwavering commitment. This time of year invites reflection on our collective achievements, providing an opportunity to acknowledge the milestones we've reached together. While there are many topics I could choose, here are just a few that I believe are relevant to many of you.

EclipseCon in Ludwigsburg, Germany, stands out as the most successful event of the year, boasting 455 participants. The community days held at EclipseCon were a great success, surpassing our expectations and garnering positive feedback from the communities. Throughout the year, we connected with our community at various events, including those in the past few months such as Theiacon 2023, JakartaOne Livestream and our first SDV Hackathon. We also held our first ever Automotive Open Source Summit which was a great success.

2023 saw intense discussions and negotiations on the proposed  Europe’s Cyber Resilience Act, which looks poised to become law. The CRA will have a dramatic impact on the software industry, and we intend to play a leadership role going forward to support our members in navigating evolving regulatory landscapes and ensuring compliance.

Our community continues to grow with new industry collaborations and the latest Dataspace Working Group. Another exciting development is the incorporation of the ThreadX project into the Eclipse ecosystem. This project is set to be the first within Eclipse with functional safety and security certifications, underlining our dedication to advancing cutting-edge and secure technologies. Much like when we onboarded the Java EE specifications under the Jakarta EE brand, this opportunity allows the Foundation to expand the types of projects we support, ultimately benefiting our members and communities.

With regard to our membership, as of the end of November, we have 360 member organizations, and we count 2021 committers. The Eclipse Foundation’s finances remain on target for 2023, as shown in the chart below. As a reminder, the 2023 budget approved by the Foundation’s board of directors and general assembly included significant growth for the Foundation as compared to 2022, with adjustments by the Board as the year has progressed. The budget includes an anticipated negative operating income for 2023; this was planned and coincides with the significant positive operating income from 2022 as we ramped up both our security and SDV initiatives over the past 12 months. As a reminder, our reporting of all financial information is in Euros.

Thank you all for your dedication throughout 2023. Here's to another year of collaboration, innovation, and shared success. We eagerly look forward to 2024, where we aim to achieve even more for our projects and their communities.
