In 2022, a number of new projects successfully kicked off and we now count over 412 projects and 18 industry collaborations. Also, this year, the Board of Directors approved the creation of Interest Groups, the next step in furthering the Eclipse Foundation’s governance framework to enable “innovation through collaboration” by empowering members to work together using a lighter-weight governance structure than our more formal working groups. Find out how to start a collaboration and share the opportunity with your colleagues and network.
After 3 years of virtual interactions, connecting with the community in person at EclipseCon in Ludwigsburg, Germany in October felt like a celebration to me! 415 participants joined Eclipse’s annual event. The technical program was diverse and strong, as echoed by the participants that completed the follow-up survey. I am very pleased that we surpassed our expectations on all levels. Once again, a big thank you to Cedric Brun of Obeo and the entire program committee for your amazing work. Year after year, they put in a major effort that builds the foundation for a successful event. A huge thank you also again to the speakers and presenters, and of course to our sponsors. We could not make it happen without you! Mark your calendars for the next edition of EclipseCon on October 16-20, 2023. We will be back with an even better EclipseCon in Ludwigsburg, Germany!
I am also pleased to report that the Foundation’s finances remain strong and on target. In October, the Board approved an updated 2022 financial forecast.
Proposed Changes to the Eclipse Community Code of Conduct
The Eclipse Community Code of Conduct has been in place since 2015 and governs all community actions. A number of updates have been proposed that would modernize and clarify the code, as well as ensure it better aligns with the structure of our community and our various channels of communication.
The updates also call for the creation of a Conduct Committee comprised of individuals from our community to address any complaints raised under the code.
The proposed updates to the code recently went through a community feedback process. Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide their comments on the draft updates. The next step is that the Foundation's board of directors will decide on whether to approve the changes at their December 14, 2022 board meeting and if approved the changes will go into effect as of January 1, 2023.
The updated Community Code will be made available on the Eclipse Foundation website as soon as approved and goes into effect. Please email us directly at conduct@eclipse-foundation.org should you have any concerns or questions with regard to the code or to make a complaint.
Change in Annual Membership Fees
The Board recently approved a change to the Eclipse Foundation’s annual membership fees. This is the first increase to our membership fees since 2007, with the exception of the conversion of fees from US dollars to euros and a change to make Associate membership fees align with Contributing members for paying Associate members.
As a reminder, every Strategic and Contributing member, as well as the few for-profit organizations that are Associate members, pays an annual fee to be a member of the Foundation. Most Associate members, as well as all Committer members, pay no fees. There are no changes to working group fees; this change is to membership fees only.
All existing members as of January 1, 2023, will not see any change to their membership fees until their annual renewal in 2024; organizations joining after January 1, 2023, will pay the revised fees immediately.
Formal notice of the specific change in fees was recently emailed to the member representative (i.e., the lead contact person for each member) of each paying member. The new fee table will be posted on our website early in 2023.
Nominations for the 2023 Eclipse Foundation Board of Directors elections will open on January 3 and will close on January 27, 2023.
The Eclipse Foundation board includes representation from both Contributing Members and Committer Members. Elected representatives play a vital role in the Eclipse governance process, providing insight into issues and opinions of the broader membership. We encourage all eligible members to participate.
Watch for an announcement soon with information on how to nominate, plus a detailed timeline for the 2023 election process.
Stay tuned for an announcement on how to nominate! The 2023 key dates of the elections process are listed here.

The MicroProfile® project is aimed at optimizing Enterprise Java for the microservices architecture. Many innovative "microservice" Enterprise Java environments and frameworks already exist in the Java ecosystem. These projects are creating new features and capabilities to address microservice architectures -- leveraging both Jakarta EE/Java EE and non-Jakarta EE technologies.
The goal of the MicroProfile® working group is to support iteration and innovation in short cycles to propose new common APIs and functionality, get community approval, release, and repeat.
Each issue of the member newsletter will feature different working groups. Leaders of working groups wishing to be featured during a particular month should contact marketing@eclipse.org.
