Executive Director's Report
First, a warm welcome to the European Space Agency (ESA) as a new Strategic Member of the Foundation. As many of you know, ESA makes use of a number of existing Eclipse projects, and has an interest in participating more openly and actively in open source. Their membership is a testimony to the value of the recent migration of our governance to Europe. We look forward to ESA’s direct engagement in our community!
Further, our membership remains strong, despite the ongoing challenges of the global pandemic. As of November 30, we have 324 Corporate Members and 1765 Committers.
I am also pleased to report that the Foundation’s finances remain strong and on target. In October, the Board approved an updated 2021 financial forecast.

The last quarter has been an extremely busy one at Eclipse.
Our main conference, EclipseCon, happened virtually in late October and was by all measures very successful. The attendance matched our expectations, and I was personally pleased to see that more than two-thirds of the attendees were first timers. The technical program was as strong as we have ever had, and with great coverage from across our broad community. I have stated this elsewhere, but a huge thank you to Cedric Brun of Obeo and the whole program committee for your great work in the selection of the program. This is a major effort that makes such a huge difference. And of course, thank you to all the speakers at the event – well done. I was very pleased with the quality of the talks. A thank you also to our sponsors, without whom such events simply would not be possible.
Watch for changes in next year’s EclipseCon. Our current plans are to be back in Ludwigsburg, Germany, for a face-to-face event, assuming the global pandemic subsides sufficiently to allow it. We expect the event to be extremely valuable for our entire community, so we ask you to mark October 24-27, 2022, on your calendars!
We also continue to deliver on major virtual events in support of various initiatives at the Foundation. This includes the first-ever TheiaCon held in November and JakartaOne Livestream in December. These types of events are proving to be invaluable to these respective communities. I encourage all communities to work with us to incorporate similar events into their plans.
As the end of 2021 draws close, I want to thank all of you, our members, for your continued support of the Foundation and the incredible contributions you have made over the past year. Eclipse has a tremendous community and our 400+ projects represent some of the best open source projects in the world. But it is only made possible by the continuing contributions of our member organizations and our committers. Thank you, and all the best for 2022!
Make the Eclipse Foundation Your Destination for Open Source Projects
As a member of the Eclipse Foundation, you already know the value of making a project open source. In his recent blog Wayne Beaton explains the key services the Eclipse Foundation offers to support and grow open source projects, while leaving your organization’s developers free to focus on writing code.
Nominations for the 2022 Eclipse Foundation Board of Directors elections will open on January 4, 2022.
The Eclipse Foundation Board includes representation from both Contributing Members and Committer Members. Elected representatives play a vital role in the Eclipse governance process, providing insight into issues and opinions of the broader membership. We encourage all eligible members to participate.
Watch for an announcement soon with information on how to nominate, plus a detailed timeline for the 2022 election process.
Virtual events continued to thrive in 2021 and are an ever important means for reaching our community. With more than 7,900 attendees over 65 virtual events as of November 30, it’s clear that the Eclipse Foundation community finds this content valuable.
Whether it's a demo, presentation, or panel discussion, webinars offer an ideal way to showcase your projects and technologies.
We are looking for speakers in the new year. Propose a talk for one of our webinar series:
