Executive Director's Quarterly Update

We are adding a quarterly executive director’s update as a new recurring feature of the member newsletter. Our intent is to report on key data points about the Foundation, including a summary of our membership, our projects, and our finances. Each quarter, I will also provide additional context about items specific to membership, as needed.

Membership Update
I am pleased to report that as of May 31, 2020, the Foundation counted 323 members, including 13 strategic members, as well as 1,613 committers. The Foundation appreciates the continued support of all members and committers, especially through the on-going COVID-19 crisis.

Financial Update
The Foundation’s Board of Directors approved the 2020 budget at its December 2019 Board meeting. The budget includes expected revenues of $6.9M and expected expenditures of $6.9M. The table below shows the recent history of revenues and expenditures for the past few years.

More Updates
In addition to the membership and financial updates above, you can read about our newly released 2020 Annual Community Report and our recent transition to Europe below.

On a personal level, I have received very positive feedback on our European initiative since we announced it, for which I am grateful. I look forward to continuing to talk to members and committers about the initiative, and I welcome input from all.

Thanks, and stay safe!

Mike

2020 Annual Community Report Released

The Eclipse Foundation has released its Annual Community Report for 2020, which covers the Foundation’s activities from April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020.

As noted by Executive Director Mike Milinkovich in a blog and a press release posted yesterday, the report highlights the Eclipse Foundation’s continued growth and evolution over the last year. More than 50 new member companies have joined since January 1, 2020, and five new working groups have been established, covering a broad set of open source technologies.

The report also highlights the many accomplishments of our members and committers, and taken as a whole, shows the significant impact our community is making. Your contributions to our collective success are appreciated, and hopefully this report reflects those contributions in a meaningful way.

Read the full report to get a complete overview of all our activities.

Transition to Europe Continues

As indicated in Executive Director Mike Milinkovich’s blog post and the member newsletter on May 12, the Eclipse Foundation has embarked on the process of establishing itself as a European-based organization. This is a process that will take months, but once complete, we expect that the Foundation will be well-positioned to cement its commitment to global expansion, and attract significant new projects.

We expect there to be no day-to-day impact to members, committers, and contributors both throughout the transition period as well as afterwards.

There will, however, be a requirement for all members to engage in the governance process to help us make this transition. While we are still finalizing the details, we expect the transition will require all members to vote on revisions to the Eclipse Bylaws and update their membership agreements with the Foundation. In many ways, making these types of updates is just “good governance hygiene,” and we hope that as we provide further details on the changes, you will engage in the process.

EclipseCon 2020 Dates to Remember

EclipseCon 2020

The final deadline for EclipseCon proposals is Monday, June 15. Visit the Call for Proposals page and the list of topics for this year’s submissions.

To see what the program committee is looking for, check out the talks that were just selected for early acceptance into the program. The Proposed Sessions page lists the talks submitted by our community so far. We welcome submissions from all our projects, so please consider submitting.

Community Day Planning
Community Day, on October 19, is focused on and around working groups. It’s a place to gather an existing community and to invite new members to join. Hold a meeting, organize a workshop, share project updates, engage in a round table discussion — whatever works for your group.

To reserve your spot on Community Day, email us at info@eclipsecon.org (the earlier, the better, since space is limited).

Be a Sponsor
Our first virtual EclipseCon is a great opportunity for our member companies to engage with the community while supporting the event with a sponsorship.

Review the updated prospectus on the website, and email us at sponsors@eclipsecon.org to ask questions or sign up.

Save the Dates
Block off October 19-22, 2020 to ensure you can attend EclipseCon. Registration will open in July.

IoT Developer Survey Closes June 26

IoT_Edge_Survey_Banners_Footers_(1)

There’s still time to complete the IoT Developer Survey for 2020. The survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete and we encourage all developers in the IoT ecosystem to add their voice.

Completing the survey gives you a unique opportunity to influence the roadmaps of the Eclipse IoT Working Group and the Eclipse Edge Native Working Group. For the first time, the survey includes questions about how developers are incorporating edge computing technologies into their IoT solutions. As a survey respondent, you will receive an email copy of these valuable insights.

Don’t miss your chance, complete the survey before it closes on June 26.

COVID-19 and the Eclipse Foundation

As the global pandemic stretches now from weeks to months, we hope members of our community are continuing to stay safe and healthy as we face unique challenges related to COVID-19. We also hope that your businesses are continuing to be successful through this crisis.

Like many member organizations, the Foundation staff continues to work remotely, and is likely to continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Also, to ensure the continued safety of our staff, we continue to restrict travel and expect to do so until at least the fall.

Regardless of the current restrictions, we continue to strive to support our community and to connect with all of you, albeit strictly through remote means.
