Eclipse University Outreach Course Content

The Eclipse University Outreach (EUO) Learning Course Management System (LCMS) site, based on the open-source Moodle project, allows faculty and other interested parties to both access and contribute educational materials. Materials make use of Eclipse, but Eclipse is not the primary focus. A course teaching introductory Object-Oriented Computing using Java that demonstrates the concepts using Eclipse is a good example of such a course.

The organization of courses on the site follows similar naming and category conventions as outlined in the final report of the Computing Curricula 2001 project (CC2001)—a joint undertaking of the Computer Society of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE-CS) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) to develop curricular guidelines for undergraduate programs in computing. For example, one course identified in the report is CS101: Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming. The reason for this choice of convention is to make it easy for faculty to find course material, given that they only have to match their current courses to ones with the same names at the site.

By providing an easy to navigate site, one that provides existing material, and one that also encourages contribution of new material, the belief is that we can create a community of educators interested in providing, supporting and teaching courses that use the Eclipse Platform as the underlying demonstration vehicle.
