Hi all,

congratulation for successfully reaching the milestone!
Are there already plans for the next development phase?
While reading through the bugzilla entries I found that one issue that I would appreciate very much has already been raised before: a possibility to generate modified graphs within the standalone STEM version and a possibility to visualize the graphs independently from the simulation. Has this already been considered or didn't I simply find the way to do it?

Matthias,

1) I think you're asking about a "graph editor". We don't have that yet, but
it is an obvious addition. You can create your own graphs if you build STEM
from source. It involves creating and editing property files that define the
graphs and their components and then running an ant script which builds all of
the built-in graphs/models/scenarios from the properites files. Ask for more
information if you want to follow this path.

2) This is definitely something we've thought about, and need, but don't have.
One thing I was thinking was we should be able to do something with GEF or GMF
to create the graph visualizations from our EMF models, but I haven't had
enough time to get familiar enough to actually do anything.

Dear Dan,

yes you were right, the thing I was looking for was a graph editor. A possibility to edit or modify preinstalled graphs could be quite useful especially for user that are not familiar with programming or that experience technical problems when following the developer instructions. So if it would be possible to implement that without to much effort it would be for sure a big plus.
Concerning the graph visualization tool: I can imagine that there are a lot of other tasks on the "wish" list. So maybe one could describe these higher level goals on the project plan website and by this further increase the support for the development team. I for myself have the possibility to invest some of my resources next year into this project and for planning this such information would be very helpful as well.

Actually, I was thinking of more of a graphical "graph editor". STEM already
has an editor for graphs (and models and scenarios). It is tree based. If
you want you can copy one of the built-in graphs and paste them into a
project. Then open up the copy and you should be able to manipulate it in the
editor.

This is a good question. I don't think I could give that summary here, but
I'll mention it to the other committers and try to get some consensus on the
future goals recorded.

Hi,

concerning the graph editior:
In my experience it is currently only partly possible to modify prebuild graphs. E.g. if I copy a prebuild graph for Germany into the existing "graph editor" (e.g. "DEU(1) population") I can modify the label of the nodes and save it, but I can not delete a node or generate a new one. As far as I understood this is currently only possible when one edit the property files and build STEM from source. So I think, in principle the available graph editor works fine and one has "only" to extend the functionalities.
Of course, in the longer perspective alternative graph editor concepts could also be considered, e.g. something like yEd (http://www.yworks.com/en/products_yed_about.html), but as I said the extension of the one available would be great as well.

concerning future goals:
I will put some additional ideas on this in the new thread: "STEM Plan for Version 2"
