JBoss server hangs in state "starting" [message #261587] Mon, 21 July 2008 11:30 Go to next message

I am running eclipse 3.3.2 with a runtime and server configured with JBoss
4.2.2.

It has been working fine for some time. Now when I start the server, using
the JBoss server view, the server actually starts and I can run web
applications that are deployed to JBoss but the server status hangs in
"starting" state. Becuase of this I can't do other server operations while
I am trying to develop and deploy my application.

I deleted and rebuilt the workspace from scratch and it still does it.

Also if I just start JBoss from the command line - no problems. But then I
don't have the advantages of running it in eclipse.

One possibility for that symptom is the amount of time Eclipse waits for the
server to start. On the Preferences dialog, under 'Server', you can
set 'Server timeout delay' to various things. Those things aren't numbers,
unfortunately, but through some experimenting I settled on 'Longer' when I
encountered something like what you describe.

Was this problem ever resolved?
I have this problem now with eclipse 3.4.1 and JBoss 4.2.2.

The timeouts are no longer configured via the Preference dialog, but
directly specified in the server configuration. It is a single number now
and I've put it to the maximum (1800 seconds). The console output finishes
with:

02:24:03,584 INFO [Server] JBoss (MX MicroKernel) [4.2.2.GA (build:
SVNTag=JBoss_4_2_2_GA date=200710221139)] Started in 48s:151ms

The server listed in the server tab hangs in state "starting". Actually,
the server is fully operational, but it shuts down when the specified
timeout expires.

You should probably ask on the eclipse.webtools newsgroup, where the JEE
and app server integration plugins (collectively known as WTP) are
usually discussed.

Better yet, for JBoss Tools or JBoss Developer Studio issues, please use
these forums:

http://www.jboss.com/index.html?module=bb&op=main&c= 20

Cheers,

Nick
