My Eclipse is mostly working, but has suddenly started displaying some odd symptoms:

1) I get no autocompletion.

2) The Tasks view has a red stop sign with an exclamation point and this message:

Could not create the view: org.eclipse.mylyn.tasks.ui.views.tasks

3) While there's nothing (aside from some expected warnings) in the Problems view, there are many things in the Error Log. Examples:

Unable to resolve plug-in "platform:/plugin/org.eclipse.mylyn.tasks.ui/icons/eview16/task-list.gif"
Unable to find Action Set: orge.eclipse.wb.core.ui.actionset
...
Could not parse value for theme color badColor 3
...

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on (and how to fix it)?

This looks pretty broken. I recommend looking for the first (serious) error in the log after session start. If you paste that error's stack trace maybe someone will recognize the problem.

I don't know how to identify a "serious" error, but the first one is:

Unable to find Action Set: org.eclipse.mylyn.context.ui.actionSet

Stack trace? Nope:

An exception stack trace is not available.

The fourth error is:

Unable to resolve plug-in "platform:/plugin/org.eclipse.mylyn.tasks.ui/icons/eview16/task-list.gif".

That one does have a stack trace:

java.io.IOException: Unable to resolve plug-in "platform:/plugin/org.eclipse.mylyn.tasks.ui/icons/eview16/task-list.gif".

here's a naive question: are you sure mylyn is installed in your current instance of Eclipse?
Maybe the workspace has references to mylyn, but mylyn actually got lost during some update / re-install etc.?

OTOH, if mylyn is present, it could still be unavailable due to an exception during its initialization.
That's one of the reasons why I asked about preceding exceptions.

Stephan: I have no idea whether mylyn is present. Is there a way to reinstall it?

I tried following the instructions at

http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/Mylyn/FAQ#Installation

but Eclipse says it can't find

http://download.eclipse.org/tools/mylyn/update/e3.4

What should I do?

Here is the way to fix:

Go to this folder: /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/
Delete whatever is in it.

Go to this folder: /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Delete the JavaAppletPlugin.plugin

Go to Oracle and Download both the JRE and JDK of the same version that you want, I recommend both 7 or 8.

Install JRE then JDK. Restart Eclipse. Everything is fine.
