Hello,

I am not sure and that is why I post here.

Is there any serious book about GMF ?

Thank you.

Best regards.

Léo,

No, there are only the farcical comedy books. :-P

Actually, Rich Gronback is working on a book. And at the rate the
second edition of the EMF book is going, he might have the first edition
of the GMF book done first. Actually, I think his book is a little more
general than just a GMF book, but it will definitely cover GMF in good
detail.

I've agreed to have the book done by the end of March, fwiw. I'm not sure
it will qualify as "serious," but it will a fair amount of GMF content,
along with QVT (Operational) and Xpand. If I'm lucky, there'll be a section
on TMF (hopefully non-fiction ;-).

Best,
Rich

Sounds very nice as well as useful :-)

Please let us know when it is done. I like customizing GMF with XPand
aspects, since the generated editor plugins always keep consistent.
Looking forward to your book ^^

Greetings,

Axel

Dear M. Gronback,

Supposing that your book is done, where can I find a copy of this book?

Otherwise, please let me know when it is done.

Thanks.

Vincent

Hi Vincent,

It's mostly done now, just awaiting instructions from the publisher on where
to send it (likely today). After that, it will be reviewed and hopefully
published in draft form electronically.

Best,
Rich

Hi Krasi,

Well, the publisher has had it for several weeks now, but still no sign of
it on the rough cuts site. I'll ping him again now.

Thanks,
Rich

I guess this is the bi-monthly request for updates on the GMF/modeling
book - I couldn't see it on the Rough Cuts site.

thanks,

I just heard from the publisher... It seems the Safari production team has
it, but there are still no hard dates.

Thanks,

Hi,

I just did my weekly check on Safari and low & behold Richard's
"Eclipse Modeling Project: A Domain-Specific Language Toolkit" is now
available as a Rough Cut. I have read the beginning of Chapter 1
(Introduction) and perused the content in general. I am really looking
forward to some quality time to dig in and really digest it.

Thanks for all of the hard work and the long road Richard.

Btw the url is http://safari.oreilly.com/9780321591364

All the best,
Joel

The book mentioned above is a EMF book.
If you are looking for GMF support in it, you will be disappointed.
There is nothing about GMF in it.
If you are looking for EMF support minus all the graphical UI GMF support,
its a great book (I have one...2 thumbs up).
If you are looking for GMF...for example "how to make polygon decorations
that are updated based on semantic value of a node?"...then search the
mailing lists.

Having purchased the pdf I would have to say I disagree with the above
post. I have most of the other books in the Eclipse series and I would
say in my opinion it is the best to date. The post is also incorrect in
that the book covers all stages from EMF to GEF/GMF and additionally
important topics such as M2M & M2T transforms. I have been using DSL's
for about 15 months and I have found some really useful nuggets of
information and clarified my understanding in other areas.

If you want a ref manual on end to end tool building I would recommend
it but of course you can't cover everything so you will need to check
newsgroups for very specific questions (but at least you will know what
questions to ask which is often the hard part)

regards
Steve

Thanks for the post, Joel. I've been without my Mac for a few days now, so
was without newsgroup access until just now.

So yes, the "rough cut" is finally available, but in need of some updates as
it was written during the Ganymede dev cycle. I'm looking forward to some
feedback to help focus the effort ;)

Best Regards,
Rich

Thanks for clearing that up, Steve. And, thanks again for letting me know

A reply to Steve and anyone else who read my post....

I think I took some crazy pills when i replied to original post....

I could swear that the link pointed to "EMF: Eclipse Modeling Framework,
Second Edition" ( http://safari.oreilly.com/9780321331885 )
Hence I went on and on about how that is not an entire Modelling based
book but a book about EMF specifically.

Now when I went back to the other posts, I realized that link correctly
pointed to the "Eclipse Modeling Project: A Domain-Specific Language
Toolkit" book.

Much apologies....

Happy New Year to everyone!

I guess we have missed the bi-monthly request for update, but still - are
there any news regarding the book?

Thanks,
Krasi
