4.4: Hang/Crash on "view report" [message #1403231]

New to BIRT and following the tutorial, I've run into problems trying to view the report. I've read this thread which says that the preview tab no longer exists and that we should use the "view report" button.

My problem is that the button in question just hangs Eclipse. If I force close it I get an error (which I've attached on the end of the message since I'm not allowed to link to pastebin yet). This happens whether I click the view report button, or choose any option from the attached drop-down menu.

I also tried setting the preview browser from preferences. I get the same hang when I get to the report design node.

Eclipse 4.4, Crunchbang Linux running under VBox, Oracle Java 7. Any help much appreciated.

I've been an eclipse user for a while and only recently tried BIRT on Fedora 20.

I've tried installing into my existing eclipse (4.4.0) and i've tried downloading the BIRT Designer Release Build: 4.4.0.

Both versions cause an operating system crash, which is something i haven't experienced in years...

I've tried various system tweaks, such as removing the googletalk package, playing with SWT_GTK=0/SWT_GTK=1 etc, to no avail.

If Gnome/GTK is the problem, i'm happy to try KDE or LXDE or some other desktop: does anyone have any helpful suggestions?
