Hello all. I'm a very clueless and naive beginner, so I hope you'll have patience with me.

I have installed Eclipse Kepler Java package and successfully worked through a very basic tutorial on Eclipse use. Now I would like to write some simple programs (games) that will run on a Web server, so I looked for appropriate tutorials, but now I'm stumped.

The tutorial mentions installing "Web Tools Platform (WTP)", but the available extensions only offer "Web developer tools" of various types. Tutorial also mentions downloading and installing server software for testing purposes, but I can't find the option the tutorial is mentioning (Window > Preferences > Server).

I assume I need to install a few more things to my Eclipse, so my questions is which ones exactly? A link to some more tutorials would also be helpful, the one that I have is from Jan 2005 and is of course working with a different version of Eclipse.

Is there anything else I need to tell you so you'll be able to give me a more meaningful reply?

Hi,

start by downloading "Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers". This edition
contains all relevant plugins needed for web application development.

http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/eclipse-ide-java-ee-developers/keplersr1

What web server do you plan to use?

Best regards

Wolfgang

Thank you for the reply. Smile

If you mean the web server for testing, I really don't have a preference yet, but the tutorial I have is working with Apache Tomcat ( http://www.eclipse.org/webtools/community/tutorials/SchoolSchedule/BuildingAScheduleWebApp.html ), thus I suppose I will start with that one, unless there is a good reason not to.

In regard to the build to download, will that one be integrated with the Eclipse version I already have? Or is it meant that I will then have two different Eclipse installations? The way I hear it, different installations for different projects are the way to go with Eclipse, but I must admit the concept is still strange for me.

no, the download is a full Eclipse bundle. But you don't need an
installation per project. Hopefully, the required plugins play well
together.

If you already have an existing Eclipse installation, you would have to
install the "Web Tools Platform" plugin: Menu "Preferences" - "Install
new software". Here, select the main update site (for Eclipse 4.3, this
is "Kepler"). Search "Eclipse Web Developer Tools" and "Eclipse Java Web
Developer Tools". Maybe also "Eclipse Java EE Developer Tools".

Best regards

Wolfgang
