I'd like to poke around the Linux kernel source tree using Eclipse. Various tutorials say the indexer takes a long time to digest the source code.

So what exactly is the indexer?

I'm guessing it has something to do with symbol tables, code completion, syntax highlighting, etc. But why would a static typed language need 30 minutes to index code? You see this a lot in Python IDEs. Why C?
