I launch the Web Services Explorer from the Run menu and the browser
opens with a blank screen and a url looking something like that:
http://localhost:50548/wsexplorer/wsexplorer.jsp?org.eclipse .wst.ws.explorer=0
It looks like the Tomcat Server is up and running but nothing is
displayed in the browser.

I realized this when i tied to test the : "Using Web Service Explorer to
test a Web service" tutorial from the "wtp community resources". The
rest of the tutorials were ran fine ("Creating a Bottom-Up Java Web
Service", "Creating a Java Web Service Client" and "Creating a Top-Down
Java Web Service Skeleton from a WSDL Document"), through the Tomcat Server.

System info: debian linux etch, sun-java5 debian package, apache tomcat
5.5.23, eclipse 3.2.2, lomboz 3.2.1RC1 (each package prerequisite
installed separately).

Thanks for your time and space.

Hi Nikolaos

Have you tried opening this link with system browser? What were results?

Are there any information in .log?

Regards,
Chris

Thanks for the interest,

well, I looked into it a bit more and here I go:

the link that opens is:
http://localhost:54614/wsexplorer/wsexplorer.jsp?org.eclipse .wst.ws.explorer=0
A random port number is chosen each time.
I try to open this link in Iceweasel 2.0.0.3 (that is Firefox for
debian) and Epiphany (Gnome) browser as well.
The page seems to load but there is no "output". Just a blank screen.

However, when I try to run the examples and tutorials located here:
http://www.eclipse.org/webtools/community/communityresources .html#ws
they web services and web services client work perfectly through the
above browsers.

There is no internal browser available. That option in eclipse is "grey"
- unavailable from default.

If there is any other piece of info you would like me to post here just
let me know.

I'm not familiar with lomboz, but I am guessing that it is based on one
of the WTP 1.5.x releases. I haven't run into any problems launching
the web services explorer on any of these releases.

One log to check would be the log for the eclipse tomcat server that
serves up the web services explorer. This should be located at
your_workspace_location/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.tomca t/catalina.log.
If there are any server errors they should be reported in there.

I could be wrong, but I think the help pages are served from that tomcat
server too. Do the help pages come up alright for you? If they don't
that might indicate that the problem is with the server.

It also might be useful to know if this happens on your system with a
"plain" WTP install, i.e. just WTP and it's prerequisites.

You are right. Opening the Help Contents from the Help menu opens the
following url:
http://127.0.0.1:57328/help/index.jsp
which is also a blank screen!

I posted in the previous post the catalina.log from the eclipse's
internal tomcat server (org.eclipse.tomcat) and nothing seems to be
wrong there.

I haven't tried a wtp clean install yet (only with lomboz) but I guess I
will if no other solution comes up soon.

PS. I am trying the same thing on a friends laptop, with exactly the
same configuration, and the the web services explorer and help contents
show up normally...

I tried all sorts of workarounds on that.
Adding it to /etc/profile, to /etc/bash.bashrc, exporting the variable
on the current shell. Nothing! The same thing goes on and on. The one
time it looked like it got the variable that was written in the logs:

Digging it up a bit more I 'd have to say that judging from the logs:
(and provided my MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME is [correctly] set)

I can see 2 key frases:

A) java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError

--> Quoting from the The SWT FAQ
(http://www.eclipse.org/swt/faq.php#browserlinux):
"Firefox can be used with Eclipse 3.1 and newer (Linux only), provided
that it has been compiled with linkable Gecko libraries. It is important
to note that Firefox downloads from mozilla.org currently do not satisfy
this criteria, but Firefox installations that are included in major
Linux distributions often do in the absence of a XULRunner installation.
Attempting to use a statically-linked Firefox install will display the
error message "No more handles [NS_InitEmbedding...error -2147221164]"."

Maybe something to do with that?

--> Quoting from the original Java documentation:
"public class UnsatisfiedLinkError
extends LinkageError

Thrown if the Java Virtual Machine cannot find an appropriate
native-language definition of a method declared native. "

Maybe something to do with that?

B) Can't load IA 32-bit .so on a IA 32-bit platform

--> Quoting from java sun forums:
"Downgrading to a previous version and upgrading to Java 6 allowed me to
see the true cause of the problem."
"question closed, the Java 1.5.0 update 10 returns this message which
the true error message can only be seen with update 7 ( don't know about
other versions)"

That means I should downgrade just to get a glimpse of what could be the
real problem? And then start another "[bug-]hunt"?

What are your suggestions?

Well, you told that you have reference laptop. Could you compare java
versions :> ?

And I'd downgrade if I were you...

Chris

That is the strange thing, the two laptops are quite the same.
Different brands, but they both have core 2 duo processors, debian etch
(testing) updated with the latest packets, sun-java5 (1.5.0-10-3) debian
package, manually installed eclipse and lomboz (each prerequisites on
each own) of the same version (3.2.2 and 3.2.1RC1 respectively)... I
cant think of any difference that could actually make a difference! It
crossed my mind to to a fresh install of debian and the rest, but then I
realized I was just being paranoid... There has to be another way. The
thing is, the reference laptop doesn't even have its MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME
variable set, neither appended to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable. It makes
no sense...

I have "built" globus toolkit 4 on the current debian sun-java5 packet
so I am a bit reluctant on downgrading and manually installing an
archive java edition, but I dont know what other choices I have left...

All ideas are, as usually, welcome!

I should add to the above that I tried Opera browser too, with the same
results - that is a blank browser page.
