Is there a way I can use an entry in the catalog for content
assist/validation... without declaring the namespace, say based on file name
or extension?

if so, any examples of where this might be done.

Nope, this not supported today... but feel to open an enhancement request.
I've heard this request before but I'm not sure if it's been opened in
bugzilla yet.
