We currently have a discussion going on on the needs of the new
requirements model that will be at the core of ORMF. All contributions

Hi, I would suggest to build the model on OMG SysML, if not, then this project will have a big, big
competitor it can't win over.

Hi Anders,

I wonder if I don't understand what SysML is about in its fullness or if you
don't understand the vision of ORMF.

ORMF is, as its name implies, an open requirements management framework. It
is not a modelling tool but a means to capture, elucidate, organise, manage
and report on requirements. The Wiki page
(http://wiki.eclipse.org/Requirements_Statement) provides a succinct list of
capabilities we see as essential for such a framework. Modelling is not
among them.

If you think that SysML is a candidate for being the underlying model for
such a tool, then I would really appreciate if you would explain how you see
this. We are always open to new ideas and learning.

Btw, we do not see ourselves in competition with anyone. If someone has a
better idea on achieving these goals we would be more than happy to
collaborate with them. Would you care to say who this is?

Hi,

SysML contains a full section requirements management , chapter 16. Ontop of that it has full
capabilities of UML ie you can model the system that satifies requirements and the test cases that
verifies the requirements.

SysML is quickly becoming the main standardised requirements vehicle and tools not integrating
with it will IMO most likely have a hard time.

I have read through chapter 16 with great interest. I agree with you on the
importance of SysML, no disagreement there. Now while ORMF is not a
modelling tool, it is our intention to support model diagram generation in a
future release, hopefully release 2. I will make sure that the model is
capable of capturing all the information needed to generate SysML
requirements diagrams as per the spec. In fact, I can also envision that a
SysML requirements model could be generated by transformation. To determine
the feasibility if that would take a deeper understanding of SysML on my
part. This again would be for a future release.

Thanks for bringing this up.

And btw, you are always welcome to contribute to ORMF to make sure that this
happened sooner rather than later.

I wonder if I don't understand what SysML is about in its fullness or if you
don't understand the vision of ORMF.

ORMF is, as its name implies, an open requirements management framework. It
is not a modelling tool but a means to capture, elucidate, organise, manage
and report on requirements. The Wiki page
(http://wiki.eclipse.org/Requirements_Statement) provides a succinct list of
capabilities we see as essential for such a framework. Modelling is not
among them.

If you think that SysML is a candidate for being the underlying model for
such a tool, then I would really appreciate if you would explain how you see
this. We are always open to new ideas and learning.

Btw, we do not see ourselves in competition with anyone. If someone has a
better idea on achieving these goals we would be more than happy to
collaborate with them. Would you care to say who this is?

I have read through chapter 16 with great interest. I agree with you on the
importance of SysML, no disagreement there. Now while ORMF is not a
modelling tool, it is our intention to support model diagram generation in a
future release, hopefully release 2. I will make sure that the model is
capable of capturing all the information needed to generate SysML
requirements diagrams as per the spec. In fact, I can also envision that a
SysML requirements model could be generated by transformation. To determine
the feasibility if that would take a deeper understanding of SysML on my
part. This again would be for a future release.

Thanks for bringing this up.

And btw, you are always welcome to contribute to ORMF to make sure that this
happened sooner rather than later.
