How to view an old version of a non-text file? [message #1077896]

hi

how can I open an old version of an Excel file? For old Java files it's no problem. But for Excel file it's necessary to open them outside of Eclipse using Excel.

I select the old commit in the history view. In the lower right corner the files of that commit are displayed. But there is no Open With > System Editor option in the context menu.

Is there another way to do this with EGit?
Is there any workaround? (e.g. using command line ... how?)

hi

I've found a workaround. It's possible to checkout the commit. (right click on commit in history view and then say Checkout) Eclipse says that it's in detached HEAD state. Then it's possible in the package explorer view to open the old version Excel file with Excel.
After that I can switch back to the branch in the Git Repositories view.

Hi Marcus,

another idea could be to only check out the old version of this file. In EGit it is unfortunately not called checkout, but you can find it in the context menu under Team > Replace With > Commit...

Afterwards you could open it with Open With > System Editor

Thanks Stefan. I should also have to be able to figure that out myself.

But I think it's also a workaround. A "Open with" command in the History view would be the best solution. In CVS it was called 'Get contents'.
