how do get the Eclipse version number? [message #1064911] Fri, 21 June 2013 11:33 Go to next message

In bugzilla, I see version numbers for Eclipse like 4.2.2 and 4.3.

But when I'm running the Mac OS version of Eclipse IDE for Java Developers, and I click to open the About window, that window shows version "Juno Service Release 2". Looking further at the Installation details, it shows

Eclipse IDE for Java Developers 1.5.2.20130211-1820 epp.package.java null

So how does one relate this information to numbers like those used in bugzilla for Eclipse?

Thanks,
Paul

Paul,

Look in the installation details Features tab. The Eclipse Platform
feature should provide the details you need.

Thank you for the quick reply Ed.

I found this --

Eclipse Platform

Version: 4.2.1.v20130118-173121-9MF7GHYdG0B5kx4E_SkfZV-1mNjVATf67ZAb7
Build id: M20130204-1200

So this would imply that I'm running 4.2.1.
Am I correct in understanding that there is a 4.2.2 out there, and possibly a 4.3?
Or are they not public yet?

Because when I click under Help to Check for Updates, it says there are no updates available.

Thanks again,
Paul

The current service release SR2 (4.2.2) happens to contain version 4.2.1 of the org.eclipse.platform feature.

4.3 will go public next Wednesday.

For components of the Eclipse SDK, bugzilla version numbers correspond to these annual release versions.
For other components you'd have to drill into the installation details of that particular feature to find their version numbers.
You already noticed that the Eclipse Packaging Project (e.g. "Eclipse IDE for Java Developers") has its own versions.

To be honest, this is still rather confusing,
but thanks for the info.

There are a few bugs that bugzilla says are fixed in 4.3,
so I'm looking forward to next week's release.

Thanks.

Paul,

Yes, it is a bit confusing being the software is composed from so many
components, each of which is individually versioned and it's especially
hard to manage the incrementing of the micro version level (third
number) because there's little tool support to tell you when you should
increment it after making a change...

Last week, Stephan said that 4.3 would be made public on the following Wednesday.
Today is Thursday. I just checked for updates and Eclipse is still saying that there are none.

Was 4.3 made public? If yes, why is Eclipse "Check for Updates" saying there are none?

Thanks.

Paul,

It depends on which repo you point Eclipse to when searching for
updates. All the latest stuff is in the kepler repo. I'm not sure it's
a good idea to try to update Eclipse itself to a new version, but maybe
that works...

Hi Ed,

I just posted a new thread asking this question again because I never got an email saying that anyone had posted a reply to my question last week. Then I found your reply.

Are you saying that 4.2.2 can not be updated to 4.3.
That doesn't sound right?

Can you please be more specific about what urls are needed to get 4.3 and how they need to be setup.

Thanks,
Paul

Paul,

You can try to update the IDE as a whole, but in the past that didn't
work well. It might work fine... It seems safer to download the 4.3
package that most closely matches your needs and install any of the
other things you need/want into that.
