I am currently running Indigo and am trying to check for updates. I get about halfway through and get this message:

No repository found at file:/C:/tmp/wtp/.

It is entirely possible that I found this directory and, not knowing what it was, deleted it.

Can I just do a simple re-install? Will it figure out everything it needs to know about existing projects?

Usually, a re-install works fine, for an existing workspace, if the
re-install really ends up with same versions of same features installed.
If you have "mixed and matched" features from different sites you'd have
to replicate those steps to be sure. I usually install a new version,
and try it out, before removing my older versions, rather than
re-install, per se.

BUT, a far better solution try first is to remove that "repository" at
C:/tmp/wtp. Check under preferences, Install/Updates, Available Software
Repositories.
If you see the repository there you just need to disable it (or, delete
it).
Then "updates" shouldn't complain.

Your suggestion helped, but there is still a problem. The update seemed to be working, but then I received an error. I tried different things, but finally deselected everything so that I was only trying to update eclipse itself, and I still get this:

An error occurred while collecting items to be installed
session context was:(profile=epp.package.java, phase=org.eclipse.equinox.internal.p2.engine.phases.Collect, operand=, action=).
No repository found containing: osgi.bundle,org.eclipse.epp.package.java,1.4.2.20120131-1457
No repository found containing: org.eclipse.update.feature,org.eclipse.epp.package.common.feature,1.4.2.20120213-0814
No repository found containing: org.eclipse.update.feature,org.eclipse.epp.package.java.feature,1.4.2.20120213-0813

I think I'm going to try your suggestion of installing into a parallel directory and getting everything transferred and running before I uninstall the troublesome version.
