Ftp access rights [message #13110] Tue, 24 July 2007 09:58 Go to next message

Hi,
someone could tell me how work the ftp access rights with Remote System
Explorer ?
The remote connection is working for my main user. I am able to open and
modify files that are in Read/Write access for me.
But when I try to modify files which belongs to another user I am not able
to modify them. I belong to the same group that the other user and the
access rights at the group level are Read/Write. The unix rights is mainly
-RW-RW-R-- for all the files on our Unix server (running under sun solaris
9).
It seems that the RSE plugin is only looking for the user right and not
the group rights. Or do I miss something in the parameters of the plugin ?
Thanks in advance for your help

Please check first whether you can modify those files with a different
FTP client. It could be a server setup issue.

For the permission display in RSE, it is natural that over an FTP
connection we cannot understand all the details of UNIX permission setup
-- after all we cannot know what group the user that the FTP Server maps
to belongs to.

That's why we currently only check the "user" bit of the access rights.
If the owner of a file has write access, RSE will treat it as writable
regardless whether the current FTP client actually is the owner or not.
That bit of code is in FTPHostFile line 72.

Feel free to make a bugzilla enhancement request if you are asking for
more, and argue why you think it should be more versatile.

Thanks,
