Hi all,

DISCLAIMER:
This may be more of a question about the general editor but I first ran into this issue in CDT so I am posting here first. I apologize if this is the wrong forum.

BACKGROUND:
I just upgraded to Eclipse 4.2 from 3.6 and I have noticed that I am no longer able to open the same file in multiple editors and therefore no longer able to view different sections of the same file side-by-side. I.e. I can no longer apply a split-view on a file. In version 3.6 a right-click on the editor's file tab gives me the options RESTORE, MOVE, SIZE, MINIMIZE, MAXIMIZE, CLOSE, CLOSE OTHERS, CLOSE ALL, and NEW EDITOR. The NEW EDITOR option allowed me to open the same file as many times as needed. The current version 4.2 only allows CLOSE, CLOSE OTHERS, and CLOSE ALL.

QUESTIONS:
1) Is there a new way of opening the same file multiple times?
2) Is there another way of applying a split-view on the same file?

GRATITUDE:
Thank you in advance for any information you are willing to share.

You can open a second instance using Window->New Editor. You can then
drag the second instance (grab the editor tab) to one side or the other.
You'll get a frame hint showing multiple frames. Drop to create a
second editor frame.

Thanks!

That's exactly what I needed to know.

Thanks. This helped me as well. I wonder why the "New Editor" item was removed from the right-click menu of the editor tabs?

Hi
Same as Richard, i wonder why that feature changed and even regressed.
In fact, i manage to open one file in two editors side by side, but cant have both in full screen. Only one editor goes in fullscreen, thats pretty annoying.
Any tip about that, or maybe the feature is still being reworked ?

Hi Fabrice, I use the full screen side by side editors all the time in 3.7, it sucks that this doesn't work in 4.2. My current solution is to minimize the other editors in the default Java perspective and save it as a custom perspective. Now I have to re-train my muscle memory to go to the perpective tab instead of just double clicking on the tab!

This is definately a regression as far as I am concerned.

In Eclipse Juno and upwards you can use Clone action from the HandySplit plugin (github.com/akikhtenko/HandySplit) to have the same file open in a split editor side by side
