In eclipse 4, is it already possible to use alternate row color without implementing IColorProvider? So just plain css..?

AFAIK, not right now. It is something that is currently being discussed and will hopefully be available in the future. The trouble is that the CSS engine will have to reach down into the JFace components to "stylize" them. As of right now the CSS engine has no knowledge of JFace/SWT.
