Hello,

I am new to Eclipse and Java and formally from a VB background. I am following a tutorial good tutorial by Mark Dexter on the sourceforge link on Eclipse. (I am unable to post the link)

On lesson 3 it asks to highlight 2+2 in the Scrapbook and "inspect" the code but I just receive an error box stating "Unable to launch scrapbook VM". If I click on the details button it provides further information;

Cannot connect to VM
socket closed

Then in the console view the output is;

ERROR: transport error 202: connect failed: Connection refused
ERROR: JDWP Transport dt_socket failed to initialize, TRANSPORT_INIT(510)
JDWP exit error AGENT_ERROR_TRANSPORT_INIT(197): No transports initialized [../../../src/share/back/debugInit.c:690]
FATAL ERROR in native method: JDWP No transports initialized, jvmtiError=AGENT_ERROR_TRANSPORT_INIT(197

Can someone assist please.

Thanks in advance

Alan

Check whether your firewall blocks the connection.

Hi Dani,

Thanks for your response.

Can you give a bit more information on this because I found some other information on the Internet about the firewall, but some suggest it is a setting actually on the Eclipse application, while others say it is a certain port number.

However, my organisation have our PC's setup where we cannot change Firewall settings and the Firewall On\Off options are disabled with the Off setting selected.

Any other help would be appreciated

Thanks you

Alan

It's not a fixed port but just one that's free at that point and it
would only be on your localhost. If this is blocked you're doomed.

Hi Dani,

As with my other problem, having my organisation allow the specific Java function to be not blocked by the organisation firewall has solved this.

Thanks again
